Legal action has been taken against Facebook by a number of users who claim that that the site tracks their online activity, even after they log out.

The law suit  brought in the US, alleges that the company last week admitted that cookie files installed on computers will track internet activity by a user, even when not logged into the site.

Technology blogger, Nik Cubrilovic, is said to have forced the admission after he tested the site, and discovered that it did not delete tracking cookies, but modified them and retained information to identify users as they browsed online.

It is said that he made the claim to Facebook over a year ago.

10 public interest groups have as the US Federal Trade Commission to launch an investigation into the online tracking measures of the site when users are not logging into it, and to find whether its new ticket and timeline features also heighten privacy risks.

Perrin Aiken Davis has brought the action seeking unspecified damages and a court order blocking tracking.
Facebook will fight the action.
