Healthy eating ‘gameified’ to lure children toward fruit & veg

The World Cancer Research Fund has set up a “healthy is fun” website in an effort to give hard pressed parents the edge in encouraging their children to adopt healthy eating habits.

Called ‘my packed lunch’ the game invites children to create their own healthy lunchbox by selecting a main, snack and drink for each day – providing a printable diary of packed lunches through the week.

At least two portions of fruit and vegetables included in each lunch with fizzy juice and restricted to once in every five day period.

The game follows a wider drive by the charity to change attitudes to packed lunches in the same manner that Jamie Oliver achieved for school dinners.

Kate Mendoza, head of education at the WCF said, “There is no doubt Jamie Oliver helped achieve great things for the food served in school canteens. But as the nutritional content of school canteen meals has improved, the healthiness of the content of lunchboxes has been left behind. if we can get children into healthy habits when they’re young we know they’re less likely.”

Dismissing misconceptions around the cost and difficulty of preparing healthy meals saying: “you can have your 5 a day for less than 50p.”
