The Zoological Society of London have produced a new iPhone app which allows budding zoologists to identify leopards, lions and other animals in the wild - from the comfort of home.

Instant WILD connects users to motion sensitive cameras set up near key habitats in Kenya, Sri Lanka and Mongolia – transmitting images direct to the app in real time when its sensor is tripped.

Users are then tasked with identifying the snapped critter saving conservationists days of tedious sifting by crowd sourcing much of the legwork.

The app is also being seen as a PR tool for the Society to promote its work through direct engagement with the wider public.

More than just an entertaining way to while away a few minutes the app is intended to aid conservationists in determining which species are most in danger.

Society spokesperson Jonathan Baillie said: "By asking people to help us identify species through the app, we are turning wildlife conservation into the massive team effort that it needs to be."
