The Drum's Gordon Young wins top individual accolade at Scottish Magazine Awards

The Drum's founder and editor Gordon Young has received the most prestigious accolade for an individual working in Scottish magazine publishing.

Young collected The Murray Cochran Award, which recognises the achievement and contribution made to the Scottish magazine industry, at last night's PPA Scottish Magazine Awards in Edinburgh.

He said of the award: “I am flattered and delighted. It is a real honour being recognised by people you respect in this way. But publishing is very much a team effort and it is fair to say The Drum would not have had the success it has enjoyed over the last few years if I was not surrounded by a first rate team.”

DC Thomson title Animal Planet was crowned magazine of the year and also won the award for best consumer magazine design.

Edinburgh-based firm CMYK Design was a big winner on the night, taking three awards in total: best business & professional
magazine design for FYi, the magazine of the Medical and Dental Defence Union of Scotland; customer magazine of the
year for Aurora, the magazine for all eleven Highlands & Islands Airports; and member magazine of the year for
Surgeons’ News, for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

The Big Issue Scotland based in Glasgow, also picked up three awards, winning best magazine cover, consumer magazine editor of the year and consumer magazine feature writer of the year.
