LED screens are being installed on top of bus stops all over London as part of the Cultural Olympiad celebrations for the Olympic year.

The Bus Tops project, one of 12 sponsored by Arts Council England and the Olympics, aims to redefine public art for the networked age.

Encased in frames made from trees felled during the Olympic construction, the LED screens will project images up to those travelling on top of London busses. Trialled projections so far have included riffs on brand taglines, such as Nike’s ‘do it’, as well as more abstract fractal patterns.

It is unclear as yet whether everybody will be able to send images and artwork to be displayed on the screens, but that appears to be the plan.

The screens go live from January 2012 and stay up until the end of the Paralympic Games in September next year.
