Time chooses The Protester, suitably masked, as 'Person of the Year'
The Protester wins!Time Magazine has chosen its "Person of the Year" for 2011. And it is a man (or woman) with no name: The Protester.
The selection was announced today on NBC's "Today" show.
Reason for the choice, says Time, is that with dissent across the Middle East spreading to Europe and the United States, these protesters are reshaping global politics.
They are "redefining people power" around the world, said the magazine. Time's "Person of the Year" is the person or thing that has most influenced the culture and the news during the past year "for good or for ill."
Last year the honour went to Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg .
US Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke was the choice in 2009; and then-President-elect Barack Obama took the accolade in 2008.
Other winners have included Bono, President George W. Bush, and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
