We asked The Drum’s Twitter followers to name what they thought the most memorable ads of 2011 were: the ones that are so good you long for the adverts to come on for the chance to see them again or the ones so bad that they have become burnt into your memories.
Some adverts received only positive or negative comments, while other choices got suggested in both the good and bad categories.
Compare the adverts voted for by you to The Drum's list of most memorable TV ads of 2011.
How could we not expect this to be voted as one of the most memorable ads? While the majority of comments given about it were positive, it did receive two votes as being the worst ad of the year, with one person calling it overrated.
‘The Force’ advert by Volkswagen received the second highest number of votes as being the best advert of the year, behind John Lewis. The advert appeals to the child in all of us, as the mini-Darth Vader uses the Force on his dad’s car.
This was voted one of the most hated ads of the year when we asked your opinion, having also received many negative comments when it was first launched. We did not ask how many people have got the song stuck in their heads after watching the advert.
Neck-and-neck with Haribo for most annoying ad of the year is Go Compare – another ad which features the main character singing. How could we not expect Gio Compario to be on this list?
An advert which led to uproar from some when it was launched, Nandos ‘Last Dictator Standing’ was deemed one of the best ads of the year by readers.
An advert which risked being banned by the ASA, Phones4U’s ‘Missing our deals will haunt you’ campaign received several positive comments - and one negative comment from a tweeter who said it was fine at Halloween but seemed a bit redundant at Christmas.
The alien Christmas advert got a mixed response in our tweets, with some loving it, and others getting a little bit creeped out by the aliens baffled by how people shop on Earth and wondering why they don’t just use Argos (you know, the shop that’s got branches on Mars and Jupiter, with rumours of a big launch on Mercury in 2012).
The meercats also led to debate with our twitter followers. Some loved the exploits of Aleksandr Orlov and chums as they stress to the world they should be using Compare the Market for insurance, not Compare the Meercat.
An advert which readers believe is one of the most memorable ads of the year for negative reasons is the elderly Wonga puppets. Are they working at Wonga because they need to pay off the loan for £200 they took out five years ago, or because the retirement age has risen? Nobody knows.
Last but not least on The Drum reader’s top ten most memorable ads for 2011 is another Christmas one – Harvey Nichols ‘Walk of Shame’. Because while doing a walk of shame the morning after is bad, everything is ok if you are wearing a nice dress and you can still manage to walk in your heels. A funny, if slightly unconventional, Christmas advert.
Other suggestions from Twitter followers, which didn’t get enough votes to be featured in the top ten, included Yeo Valley, Nokia Lumia, Cravendale’s cat with thumbs, Halifax and Twinings. We’ll leave you to decide which ones were voted good and which ones were voted bad.
