According to research published by The Sunday Times ahead of its Apps List 2012 being published on 22 January, over half of smartphone owners use their devices for apps more than calls, texts or emails.

It was discovered that 81 million apps were downloaded in the United Kingdom alone in the last week of 2011.

The Sunday Times found that smartphone owners have an average of 38 apps on their device, with Scottish smartphone owners found to have an average of 48 apps. It was also found that about half of smartphone owners download an app at least once a week.
