Comet cancels plans to appoint new ad agency following pitch

Comet postpones appointmentComet postpones appointment

The Drum can reveal that Comet has scrapped plans to appoint a new ad agency.

Despite holding an advertising pitch last month, the electricals retailer has now confirmed to The Drum that it will not be appointing a new agency in the near future.

A spokesperson said: "We can confirm we’ve postponed the scheduled launch of a new advertising campaign while future strategy of the business is confirmed.

"The agencies that pitched for the project have been notified. Incumbent agency Euro RSCG will continue with the existing campaign until further notice.”

The news comes a fortnight after private equity group OPCAPITA took control of the company for a token price of £2.

About 450 jobs are under threat at the company as it reduces its repairs service to cut costs and "focus more single-mindedly on store operations". Chief executive Bob Darke said "significant savings are required to secure the long-term viability of our business".

I assume they'll not be paying the agencies for the wild goose chase they just had them on? I think it is disgusting that companies have agencies pitching for stuff on the whim of a marketing department when there was never a budget there in the first place
