Farnborough FC has announced this year’s squad line-up including Beckham, Maradona, Messi, Pelé and Beckenbauer…of sorts.
A partnership between Farnborough FC and self-proclaimed mischief makers Paddy Power has seen every player in the team change their name by deed poll to that of a legendary player in their respective position.
The deal sees Paddy Power become title sponsors of the club, which had been trapped in administration since April, with the bookmakers branding featuring on ‘Boro’ kits and across the stadium. In addition Paddy Power will also cover the cost at the gate this weekend in a gesture to fans and an open-invitation to kick off the season with a full house at Paddy Power Park.
The ‘star-studded’ team will be led by an equally impressive manager - José Mourinho. Previously known as Spencer Day, Boro’s very own ‘Special One’ commented: “We’re delighted to have Paddy Power on board. Over the summer it looked touch and go whether we’d even start the season, but now we’ve got the best squad ever assembled. Although it’s not all good news, Pelé and Maradona have almost come to blows over who gets to wear the number 10.”
Part of Paddy Power’s ‘We Hear You’ campaign, which is designed to put the fans at the centre of the brand’s activity, the concept was created by Frank PR with Heavyweight Sport Marketing brokering the deal with Farnborough FC.
Paddy Power added: “We hear you, Farnborough FC. Not only does our support help secure the future of a great club but, in the modern world of sky-high money for season tickets, fans can forget the Nou Camp and now need only to travel to Paddy Power Park to see some of the world’s greatest in action… We can't wait to see the stars of Paddy Power Park in action throughout the season.”
